If you haven’t watched Mononoke, I strongly suggest you get on that (and click on the picture to find a list of TV Tropes associated with it). But I wanted to mention a couple of points about Kusuriuri-san’s kimono situation.
In the most part, he’s wearing a woman’s furisode in a feminine style, especially from the waist up. His collar is pulled very (sexily [!]) low in back, with multiple layers of traditional Heian color (salmon and spring green) underneath, and a wide furisode obi tied in a diagonal large bunko bow in the back— coincidentally, one of the few furisode bows that could be tied by yourself if you know what you’re doing.
The sleeves are slightly modified from the typical square furisode sleeve, looking more like the kimono worn with hakama. This would fit pretty well with the zubon/hakama pants he’s wearing underneath, tied up to allow for running.
The fold under the obi is also a bit longer than strictly correct, suggesting that the kimono is full-length but hiked up a bit.
The jewelry is a character-enhancing addendum (he’s supposed to be ‘exotic’, right?), and the geta he wears are tall “two-toothed geta” that are easy to walk in, though I’m actually a little surprised he doesn’t wear Tengu Geta (“ippon-ha”) to add to his weird mystique.
In essence, he is wearing a mix of masculine and feminine style in his kimono, but it is leaning much more toward a woman’s furisode (collar, sleeves, obi and coloration)—which just makes him incredibly fabulous.
Two thumbs up, A++ Would Watch Again, etc.
Give this anime a try if you have somehow missed it!
